Avid festival goers travelled interstate in droves this year to see their favourite acts during Australia’s summer music festival season.
Despite the bitter reality of the global financial crisis, ticket sales to music festivals around Australia have boomed over summer with tens of thousands of ‘Festival Travellers’ packing up and heading over the border to rock out.
Jetstar Group General Manager Commercial, David Koczkar said the statistics showed yet another way Australians are travelling this year despite the economic slowdown.
“Even during the economic crises we’re still witnessing strong demand in the leisure market supported by new travel trends like ‘Festival Travel’,” Mr Koczkar said.
Research conducted by Street Press Australia throughout January discovered that nearly 40,000 people had travelled interstate and internationally for music festivals (see breakout box below).
National Marketing Director of Street Press Australia Leigh Treweek said Australia was beginning to catch on with the rest of the world with this latest travel trend.
“Australia is experiencing a huge increase in the amount of music festivals, and attendance numbers, with punters desperate to experience the festival atmosphere no matter how far they have to travel,” Mr Treweek said.
“Going to a music festival in your own state is no longer guaranteed as many of Australia’s leading festivals sell out in minutes, so more people now travel to make sure they don’t miss out.
“Hot festivals for travel are major events like Big Day Out but there are a number of festivals getting huge crowds like Future Music Festival, Soundwave and Good Vibrations.
“There are also local festivals like Southbound in Perth, Meredith and Falls Festival in Victoria that attract a huge number of fans from outside their state,” Mr Treweek said.
One key factor that may be helping this movement is the falling price of airfares and the growing competition between budget carriers in Australia.
“With Jetstar, people can grab low fares, travel interstate, stay with friends, all within their means.
“Australians don’t just see their own city as a place to party – they will jump on a plane at the drop of a hat to see their favourite DJ or band outside their home state,” Mr Treweek said.
Local Melbourne festival travellers James Johnston and Carly Russell headed up to Good Vibrations in Sydney recently to revel in another state’s backyard.
“This is the first time I’ve travelled for a festival, we stayed with friends in Sydney and got to party in a whole new atmosphere” Ms Russell said.
“I can see why people are going interstate for festivals, because it turns your usual festival experience into a short holiday with a new venue, new people – basically a new adventure,” Mr Johnston added.
Australian low fares airline Jetstar is the first airline to recognise the growing number of ‘Festival Travellers’, recently partnering with Australian-based festival website MySummerMusic.com.
Director of MySummerMusic.com, Marc Mancini said the partnership provided a one stop shop for the growing number of music lovers travelling for festivals.
“We have a large number of subscribers logging on each week to check out their favourite acts, and then clicking through to Jetstar to book their ‘Festival Travel’,” Mr Mancini said.
“Currently, there are more than 170 festivals happening throughout Australia and the number seems to grow every year.
"The recent announcement of the Splendour in the Grass festival is a perfect example where fans from around the country will travel far and wide to attend the festival."
